work

Our dream is for you to think of Emblaze as a pretty damn cool employer – a place you'll be proud to talk about with friends.

But that reputation must be earned by us doing all the right things. Part of this is embellishing our take on work life and how the two worlds can work in harmony. We'll look after you, treat you with respect and show genuine care for the things that make you special. We'll lift you through positive sentiments and by backing you to be more courageous and experimental. In return, we'll ask big things of you, like to think deeper, power through tough times and pitch in when it counts. We believe that embracing challenging work and striving for greatness will not only bring fulfillment, but also make us feel like we're part of something rather cool.

This page provides a simple overview of your employment. For full details of Emblaze's employment policies please refer to the company handbook.

Emblaze reserves the right to alter or withdraw some of the features mentioned to align with business conditions.

life

Flexibility

A wise man once said, "I don't count the days, I make the days count". A saying that neatly symbolises Emblaze's take on flexibility.

See, if we were to measure our value solely based on the time we spend together, we'd risk making our relationship feel all too transactional.

Emblaze rightly expects the highest standards of you, as you expect of Emblaze. But excellence doesn't always clock off at 5.30pm. Sometimes it takes that bit extra to reach 'perfect' or just another hour to summon that winning idea. Other times, there's simply more work than time allows. On occasion, you might need to stay a bit longer due to a demanding project or a convergence of work, and that's okay. We don't keep tabs on extra hours any more than we clock up the fun times together. Through careful workflow planning and company resourcing, we’ll always strive for balance, ensuring no one feels they're working more than feels right.

Managing time

As professionals, you're trusted to manage your time judiciously within the realms of your contracted hours. If you feel it’s right to start earlier because you need to leave early then go for it. If your lunch with friends overran and the right thing to do is to stay at your desk a little longer thereafter, then that’s your call. Ultimately, you’ll be measured by your judgements, so shared trust is key.

Appointments

Formal appointments like doctors’, dentists’, vets’ or lawyers’ visits are fine, but it's polite to keep the team informed. Longer appointments of more than 2 hours need approval from a Director. You can keep the nature of your appointment discreet as long as your diary is updated. Minor leave requests for errands like going to the tip, leaving early before the shops shut or hitting the gym are also okay if the same protocol is observed.

Overtime and lieu

We don't typically do time in lieu or pay overtime unless under exceptional circumstances, when specifically authorised by a Director.

Flexible working

After 6 months, you can request flexible working – something that Emblaze has a pretty good track record of accommodating. Just chat with a Director (principally Stephen) if this is something you require.

Family business

Families can bring a challenging dimension to your time in employment, whether you have children or not. Sometimes, you might prefer not to discuss these sorts of matters, but if you need space to deal with a family challenge, and work can assist, please speak to a Director or your Wellbeing Lead.

Parenthood

Emblaze actively encourage working parents to share the ups and downs of family life – not least to reassure all other parents that they're not alone! As a parent, you're fully expected to leave early at times for the school run, attend assemblies, nativity plays, and even rush back to drop off the packed lunch you forgot to put in the bag that morning. Parenting is hard, so Emblaze strives to make things a little easier for you.

House rule

The foundation of flexibility is trust, and at its core lies transparency. For Emblaze, this means sharing our whereabouts and utilising our calendars effectively. You are expected to log any deviations from your normal working day, including days when you will be working from home or at a specific location.

Take your time

Each calendar year you are entitled to a pro-rata allocation of 25 days paid leave + the usual 8 Public Holidays (and any other Public Holidays the Royals wish to put our way!).

Please use your leave, even during busy times. Work is a constant and so is your personal life, so please make good use of your time as it's good to take a break. The responsibility to take leave lies with you, provided you give the required amount of notice, which is:

1–3 days
=
2 weeks notice
4 days or more
=
4 weeks notice

By all means float your prospective dates with the team, and keep in mind your presence on client activities. Requests for leave can be refused if the dates are incompatible with business demands or clash with days already reserved for company initiatives.

It's Chriiiiiiiiistmaaaaas!
Unconnected to faith, Emblaze shuts its advent calendar doors over Christmas. This allows us to end the year together, knowing that we are all taking time to rest and spend it in ways that make us happy. The handful of non-Public Holidays days over Christmas (usually 3 days if you work full time) will be automatically deducted from your annual leave allowance.

All in all you can enjoy a healthy total of 33 days paid leave (pro rata)… actually… make that 34 days! ↴

Birthday off!

That's right – your birthday treat is the day to yourself (once you've completed one full calendar year of employment). You'll need to take the exact day of your birthday. Or, if your birthday falls on a weekend or Public Holiday, the final day of your working week before your birthday. This is a bonus nondeductible day of leave that is non transferrable and cannot be stored, swapped or moved, so enjoy it!

Extra day off

…in exchange for ten full years of service, so strap in and play the long game!

Once you get there, this additional day of leave is a nice little bonus that will be added to your annual allowance year on year and is yours to take whenever you need it.

2 days

additional nondeductible leave to be taken around your wedding.

House rule

'A good handover is no handover'. A reminder to steadily migrate your duties activities ahead of you taking leave. This won't always be possible, so make sure clients and the team are aware of anything that may arise in your absence by populating a Teams board on Flow. You also need to set an Out of Office to ensure you can fully switch off without feeling you need to hover over your email.

Giving back

Volunteering

Emblaze encourages you to make a difference by providing you with a nondeductible  volunteering day each year.

The day needn't align to our principal area of business; it can simply be used for a cause you feel passionate about (provided it's not deemed politically controversial!).

You may wish to volunteer at a homeless shelter, help set up the school fete, or perhaps repaint the church hall. You could also engage in gardening at the local community center, clean the pens at an animal sanctuary, or provide tutoring at a special needs facility. Consider using your day, as it will benefit both you and your community immensely.

As with any time away from work, please provide at least 2 weeks' notice and minimise disruption.

Fundraising

Emblaze will match your efforts to raise funds for a worthy cause up to a total value of £500 per calendar year.

So, no excuses – put on your running shoes or parachute and get raising!

House rule

The volunteering day cannot be used for activities like helping a friend move house, training for a sponsored event, or rehoming an animal. It must be dedicated to a recognised place of need.

Please understand the need for some governance. You'll be expected to share details of your volunteering day before and after so we can celebrate your generosity together.

Emblaze goes to great lengths to ensure everybody is well rewarded – at least in line with but more often above expectation given the status, geography and expectations of the business.

Despite this ambition, we can all struggle for money at times. As such, Emblaze will always do its best to listen and help if you ever feel the pinch, supported through all the other facilities the Company provides.

PAY RISES

Your salary is reviewed on an annual basis, towards the end of every year, with any adjustments being made in readiness for the coming year. When assessing eligibility for an increase, Emblaze will look at things like performance, skills, adherence to company directives, added value and industry benchmarking – all of which is dependent on the means of the business at the time. Pay rises can still occur during the year, but only through formal promotions or evidence of prolonged exceptional performance.

PENSION

An auto enrolment pension scheme is provided through Nest, with Emblaze contributing 3% of your salary and you  contributing 5%. While the Company cannot advise on pension matters, this provision will help you save towards your future – an area that Emblaze is currently looking to improve on. Remember, if you leave the pension scheme, Emblaze will no longer continue to make contributions for you.

One-to-ones will take place on a quarterly basis, toggling between virtual and in-person. These are good opportunities to discuss your progress and keep a healthy mindset.

SOCIAL

Tea with Me is a gentler opportunity each quarter to share your feelings in engage with others as we collectively explore matters around health and wellbeing. You also get a £5 budget to spend on pastries!

Company gatherings are arranged relatively frequently to get us all to spend time together, expanding the conversation beyond business.

Parenthood promise

Emblaze offers competitive and supportive maternity provisions, placing us among the top 18% of employers offering enhanced benefits during the first 4–13 weeks, compared to the 33% who offer only the statutory minimum.

All team members who have been employed continuously for at least 26 weeks by the end of the qualifying week (15 weeks before the expected week of childbirth) are entitled to the following family leave and pay.

Who's who

Conventional wisdom states that each employee should have a line manager responsible for supporting them in their work, developing their skills, and addressing any concerns. However, in today's dynamic work environment, this can be a challenging task for one person alone. At Emblaze, we approach this convention differently, offering an employee experience that encourages interaction with various voices from across the business for different types of conversations.
